How Our Surfers Paradise SmartWay Storage Service Works
For those living in a high rise, it is essential that the manger of the building is notified orf your move into or out of the building.
The lift will need to be booked for removal use, plan of entry into the building rules and regulations for removals checked and then coordinate booking of the storage service with SmartWay Storage.
- SmartWay will then bring the modules to your residence
- SmartWay will load your modules (unless self load option has been chosen)
- SmartWay will give the keys of the locks to you and paperwork will be signed
- SmartWay will take you modules back to our facility in Molendinar for safe keeping.
How to prepare fridges and washing machines for storage as per instructions from Fisher & Paykel
To store a Fisher & Paykel washing machine or fridge properly, empty the appliance, clean it thoroughly, and dry it completely. Always keep the doors securely ajar to allow air circulation and prevent mold and odors. Store both units upright rather than on their sides.
Specific instructions for each appliance type include:
Washing Machine
- Remove Moisture: Disconnect from the water supply, run a quick empty cycle, and wipe down the drum.
- Transit Protection: If moving it long-distance, reinsert the original transit bolts to lock the drum in place. For top loaders, ensure the agitator or bowl is locked or packed so it won’t bounce.
- Accessories: Pack your hoses and the detergent dispenser safely inside the drum to avoid losing them.
- Cover: Use a cotton sheet or moving blanket to protect the machine from dust, but avoid plastic wrap, which can trap moisture.
Fridge/Freezer
- Defrost & Clean: Defrost the freezer and clean the entire interior with warm water and a little baking soda, then leave it to air dry.
- Water & Ice Makers: If your Fisher & Paykel model has an ice and water dispenser, turn off the water supply, empty the water line, and turn off the ice maker on the control panel. Securing Shelves: Remove perishable food and tape down any loose interior shelves and drawers so they don’t slide or break during transit.
- Re-starting After Storage: Transport the fridge upright. If you must lay it on its side, Fisher & Paykel recommends placing it on its right-hand side (viewed from the front). Let the fridge stand completely upright for several hours before plugging it back into the power point.
SmartWay Storage modules are made of quality timber which ‘breathe’ to allow for some ingress of moisture. The two main reasons for mould in a module or a container is the moisture that is within the module – not the outside. For this reason fridges and washing machine should be as dry as possible on entry to storage.
However, if mould forms, a wipe with bleach will clean the surfaces of the fridge back to gleaming clean.

How long does it take to load a module?
Time allowed for one module is one hour, however, in a highrise and using a lift and ute to get items from the basement, this may push the time out to 90 min or 2 hours.
I have a one bedroom apartment, how much storage space do I need?
Generally a one bedroom apartment needs only one module or 10 cubic meters. We have a storage calculator on our website that can help you with storage space needed or one of our team can do an in home quote to better assess your storage needs.
Can I access my items while they're in storage?
Yes. Access can be arranged at our storage facility if required. Many clients don’t need access during storage, but it’s available if plans change.
How much notice is required?
Advance booking is recommended, especially for container storage, but short-notice requests can often be accommodated depending on availability. Highrise bookings would also require advanced notice as both the manager of the building, and SmartWay need to coordinate booking times.
